Impressive increase in the number of electric car in Europe

July 15, 2021

The Center of Automotive Management (CAM) analyzed all registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric cars (BEVs) within Europe and China in the first quarter of 2021. The Center of Automotive Management is located in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. They regularly analyze the international e-mobility market. In doing so, they not only focus on comparisons between different countries, but also measure the innovative strength of the automakers.

Share of PHEVs

The significant increase in the number of new PHEV registrations in Europe was remarkable. CAM’s analysis is called “E-mobility Market trends of the core regions of Europe and China Q1 2021 ”. According to CAM, Europe and China are currently at the forefront of the plug-in hybrids and electric cars market. The Prof. Dr. Stefan Bratze, the director of CAM, said that Europe and China are currently also the driving resilience behind electromobility.

Europe

In Europe, a total of 452,901 electric vehicles were registered in the first quarter. That was 250,491 PHEVs and 202,410 BEVs. With the PHEVs you see an increase of 153.5% and with the BEVs it is up by 54.6% compared to last year.

China

Last year, almost all of the Chinese auto industry was down when Covid-19 took over daily life there. This year you can see that a clear recovery has taken place in China. In China, no fewer than 489,000 new electric vehicles were registered in the first quarter, including 81,000 PHEVs and 408,000 BEVs. This is almost five times as many as in the same period last year. If we look at the share in the new registrations, we see that this rose in the first quarter from 3.5 to 9.6 percent.

The difference

So there is a huge difference between the European market and the Chinese market. The Chinese market consists mainly of electric vehicles such as BEVs, while in Europe we are only now buying the BEVs. You can also see this in the European countries where most electric vehicles are sold.

After China, Germany is the largest in the electric vehicle market. In the Netherlands, the number of plug-in hybrid cars tripled in the first three months of this year. At eastern neighbors, PHEVs accounted for 11.9 percent of all new registrations in the first quarter. The share of newly registered BEVs in Germany was 9.9 percent. The number of plug-in hybrids rose sharply in France. More PHEVs than BEVs were registered in France. The growth that has taken place in France is more than 300 percent. But also in other European countries, such as Norway and the United Kingdom, the number of new PHEVs grew remarkably, but in both countries the BEVs were still the most popular.

Charging facility construction

The market share of electric cars and hybrid vehicles is on the rise and there are more policies and regulations on the construction of charging facility. Whether it’s private parking lots, companies, commercial areas, residential buildings or charging stations, more charging equipment is needed to serve the exploding number of electric vehicle users.

As a property owner or an architect you now have the opportunity to demonstrate that you are innovative and environmentally aware: Get your property ready for an efficient charging infrastructure. Ensure that the building has suitable connection power and factor in a sufficient number of cables and empty ducts. We will be happy to assist you with integrating charging solutions in your buildings.
